Mullein has a rich history especially with Hekate, being worked with in rites with hag torches burning to “light the way”, to uncover hidden secrets, and to protect from nightmares and baneful magic. As it opens the way between the living and the dead, particularly when burning the torches as the light can help guide the way, it also makes for a strong ally in necromantic workings, whether calling forth the dead to commune or when helping them pass over. Some people, particularly some tribes from Turtle Island, the so-called Americas, work with the herb in soul retrieval to aid in returning the conscious or unconscious and returning the spirit of someone who had been bewitched.
